What is a candling torch?
A device used to check egg fertility.
Why do I want to check egg fertility?
This allows you to make informed decisions about your nests. For example, if you candle your eggs and you see they are fertile, then naturally, you continue encouraging your hen bird to sit on the eggs. If you have confirmed that your eggs are not fertile, you can make the decision as to whether or not you discard the eggs allowing your hen to lay again – hopefully fertile this time.
How do you use a candling torch?
7 – 10 days after an egg is laid, shine the candling torch on the egg. If the egg is fertile, you will see a tiny embryo developing inside which looks like a whole lot of veins. If you do not see fertility, maybe check again in a few days.
